"
The A1 and Polo platforms, he said, were developed simultaneously but the A1 got more high-strength, lightweight steel to make it lighter and stronger. The tracks were also widened front and rear and the wheelbase increased. Steering and suspension? The Audi?s steering ratio is a bit more direct and the rear axle wider, and while the suspension is basically the same design, the geometry is different ? spring and damper rates have been altered and unique-to-Audi bushes fitted. Oppure qua:
The A1 does share some family links with the Polo; however, Audi stresses the two cars are very different, despite conceding it uses the ''Volkswagen toolbox'' to build its car.
"
There are some key differences, though, designed to make the A1 more premium and justify its bigger price tag. The underpinnings
use more high- and ultra-high-strength steel to reduce weight and make it stiffer, improving handling.
It is also wider, lower, uses a wider rear axle, retuned suspension, faster steering and unique stability-control tuning.
Even so, the two cars are very similar on the road and you can certainly sense they are cousins.
But there are some subtle yet important differences."
