L’azienda originariamente si chiamò Tsukumo Shokai, cambiando nome già tre anni dopo in Mitsubishi Shokai, laddove Mitsubishi in giapponese significa “tre diamanti”. Si dovette aspettare il 1917 – cioè esattamente cent’anni fa – per la commercializzazione della prima automobile, che tra l’altro fu la prima ad essere prodotta in serie in Giappone.

Mitsubishi Motors engineers the world's first energy-saving Turbo Diesel engine with Silent Shaft Technology.
1990
TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM
Mitsubishi Motors designs the world's first electronically-controlled Traction Control System, which would later become a legally required safety feature in many countries, including the United States.
1990 3000GT
Mitsubishi Motors launches the iconic 3000GT (GTO) with groundbreaking technology which includes a high-performance fulltime AWD suspension and active aerodynamics. Motor Trend Magazine names the 3000GT VR-4 its Import Car of the Year for 1991.

Negli anni Novanta il costruttore nipponico diventò particolarmente noto in tutto il mondo grazie ai suoi successi sportivi: al volante di una Lancer Evolution il finlandese Tommi Mäkinen vinse dal 1996 al 1999 il Campionato del mondo di rally (classifica piloti) per quattro anni consecutivi, mentre fino al 2007 Mitsubishi conquistò con il leggendario Pajero ben dodici vittorie alla Parigi-Dakar, di cui l’ultima fu la settima consecutiva.
