ROME, June 3 (Reuters) - Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said his government would be willing to intervene with Germany to support automaker Fiat's bid for Opel if Fiat were to make such a request.
"If Fiat were to ask us to intervene we would do so ... if Fiat asked us to take steps with (German Chancellor Angela) Merkel then we will," Berlusconi said in an interview on state television company RAI.
After making an initial bid for General Motors Corp's (GM.N: Quote, Profile, Research) European arm, Fiat appeared to withdraw from the race, leaving the way clear for Canadian car parts group Magna (MGa.TO: Quote, Profile, Research) to clinch a takeover.
However, the German government made clear on Wednesday that Fiat and China's BAIC still had a shot if they improved their bids.
"The process is still open to all the bidders," government spokesman Ulrich Wilhelm told reporters in Berlin.
